How to use daily hygiene to practice mindfulness and relaxation

Mindfulness and the techniques taught in MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) courses are great ways to slow down, be aware of the present moment, and reduce stress. One of the practical ways to incorporate mindfulness into your daily life is to be aware of your body during daily hygiene – while washing your hands, showering or bathing. This time, which we usually spend thoughtlessly, can become a valuable opportunity to mindfully observe the body and the sensations that arise in it. We can also use a massage glove for this and consciously focus on every part of our body.

Why practice mindfulness during hygiene?

Daily hygiene is an activity that most of us do automatically, without thinking. We are used to quickly washing our hands, taking a shower or washing our face while our mind wanders somewhere else – thinking about the past, planning the future or dealing with everyday worries. However, mindfulness teaches us how to come back to the present moment and be consciously aware of what we are doing.

Conscious perception of the body during daily hygiene can have several benefits:

  1. Connecting with the present moment: Paying attention to what your body feels while washing brings you back to the present and stops thinking about past or future events.
  2. Calm and relax: Mindfulness forces you to slow down and focus on subtle sensations, which can help reduce tension in your body and improve your mental state.
  3. Cleansing Symbolism: In addition to physical cleansing, you can focus your thoughts on the fact that with each drop of water, unnecessary and outdated things that you no longer need are leaving your body.

How to practice mindfulness while washing hands, showering and bathing

Mindfulness techniques taught in MBSR courses focus on how to integrate mindfulness into everyday activities. When showering, bathing or washing your hands, you can pay attention to several key points:

  1. Perception of water: When you wash your hands or take a shower, pay attention to how the water affects your body. How does it feel on your skin? Is the water hot, cold, or room temperature? Do you feel a stream of water on your shoulders, back or hands? Feel each moment consciously and try to focus only on the sensation that the water creates.
  2. Using a massage glove: If you have a massage glove, you can use it to become mindfully aware of every part of your body. With each touch, notice the texture of the glove and how it feels on your skin. Is this feeling soft, rough, pleasant, or unusual? Focus on the sensations in your hands, feet, back, and other parts of your body.

   3. Visualizing Cleansing: In addition to physical perception, you can include visualization in your mindfulness practice. Imagine that the water washes away not only impurities from your body, but also everything that you no longer need in your life. You can visualize negative emotions, stress or worries leaving with the flow of water. This process will help you to symbolically “cleanse” not only the body, but also the mind.

Benefits of mindfulness during daily hygiene

Practicing mindfulness while showering, bathing or washing your hands can have positive effects on your physical and mental health. Here are some of the main benefits:

  1. Increased mindfulness: By being aware of every sensation in your body, you will be more aware of what is happening right now. This will allow you to better manage everyday stressors and bring more peace into your life.
  2. Reduce stress and anxiety: Being mindful of the water and the sensations in your body will help you reduce your stress and anxiety levels. This practice brings you back to the present, a powerful tool for managing hectic days and challenging situations.
Improving focus and concentration: With conscious hygiene, you train your ability to focus on a simple task. This ability will carry over into other areas of your life, helping you to be more productive and better able to concentrate on work or studies.
  3. Connecting body and mind: Daily hygiene with the practice of mindfulness will allow you to better connect your body and mind. This state helps you become more aware of your body’s signals, which can lead to better health and a greater ability to respond to your body’s needs.

Mindfulness in daily hygiene is a simple but effective way to integrate mindfulness into everyday life. By consciously perceiving the sensations of water on your body, you can better connect your mind with your body and symbolically cleanse your mind of the unnecessary.
